A PMHNP, or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, is a healthcare professional who is trained to provide mental health care to patients. They often work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practices, and are responsible for diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. PMHNPs are advanced practice nurses who have completed additional training and education beyond that of a registered nurse (RN). A college of nursing that offers a PMHNP program typically provides students with the education and clinical experience needed to prepare them for this advanced nursing role. Students in a PMHNP program may take coursework in areas such as pharmacology, pathophysiology, mental health assessment and diagnosis, and therapy and counseling techniques. They may also complete clinical rotations in various mental health settings to gain hands-on experience in treating patients. Upon completion of a PMHNP program, students may be eligible to take a national certification exam, such as the PMHNP-BC (Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner – Board Certified) exam offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
