- College Town University (CTU) is a small university on the banks of the Purple River. The university has a student population of about 2,500 full-time students. Students can major in five different areas (Fine Arts, Science, Math, Business, and Technology) at CTU. Each semester, there are 100 courses offered. CTU wants to computerize their courses and student records. You have been hired as a consultant to work with the president and the chief technology officer (CTO) of CTU to design a database for the system. What entities would you suggest, and what are some attributes that should be included for each entity?
- You are the CIO of your organization. Explain to the board of directors what type of data management system you would recommend and why you would recommend it.
DQ 2 WORKOUT ROOM (SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT)
You will be completing a Signature Assignment in Week 3. The Week 3 Lab (the Signature Assignment) aligns with Outcomes C, D, and E. The Lab provides an existing business (Sample) database. SQL DML will be used to manage the database and extract data to answer business questions. The results will be reported and analyzed with a description provided. These activities are common activities that take place in businesses on a daily basis.
These common activities can be broken down into steps:
- Gather/obtain business requirements
- Use SQL with DML and manage the data in the database
- Describe and analyze query results
- Create a report on the data results

Our focus for this discussion will be numbers 3 and 4, to help you prepare for the Week 3 Signature Assignment Lab.

Submit your numbered answers to all problems in a single Microsoft Word document. Some of these problems require you to draw entity relationship diagrams (ERDs), or class diagrams. For this assignment, you may sketch these diagrams by hand and insert a photo or scanned image of your sketch in your Word document. Make sure your sketches are legible in the document. If you choose, you may also create these diagrams using the drawing tools in MS Word, or create the diagrams in MS Visio or another application and copy and paste them into your Word document. You will learn more about using MS Visio to create these diagrams in Week 2. Please follow the 80/20 Rule for all written assignments: 80% or more of the work is in your own words and 20% or less is in the words of another author.
