BIAM 530 Week 1 Database Systems and Data Models

BIAM 530 Week 1 Discussions

DQ 1 COLLEGE TOWN UNIVERSITY DATABASE & DBMS BUSINESS APPLICATIONS

  • College Town University (CTU) is a small university on the banks of the Purple River. The university has a student population of about 2,500 full-time students. Students can major in five different areas (Fine Arts, Science, Math, Business, and Technology) at CTU. Each semester, there are 100 courses offered. CTU wants to computerize their courses and student records. You have been hired as a consultant to work with the president and the chief technology officer (CTO) of CTU to design a database for the system. What entities would you suggest, and what are some attributes that should be included for each entity?
  • You are the CIO of your organization. Explain to the board of directors what type of data management system you would recommend and why you would recommend it.

DQ 2 WORKOUT ROOM (SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT)

You will be completing a Signature Assignment in Week 3. The Week 3 Lab (the Signature Assignment) aligns with Outcomes C, D, and E. The Lab provides an existing business (Sample) database. SQL DML will be used to manage the database and extract data to answer business questions. The results will be reported and analyzed with a description provided. These activities are common activities that take place in businesses on a daily basis.

These common activities can be broken down into steps:

  1. Gather/obtain business requirements
  2. Use SQL with DML and manage the data in the database
  3. Describe and analyze query results
  4. Create a report on the data results

Review the Signature Assignment Overview page in the Introduction & Resources module.

Our focus for this discussion will be numbers 3 and 4, to help you prepare for the Week 3 Signature Assignment Lab.

What is the best way to analyze data and how should it then be reported? What would be your recommendations for using text, charts, etc.?

BIAM 530 Week 1 Homework

Complete the problems at the end of Chapter 1: Problems 1–10.

Complete the problems at the end of Chapter 2: Problems 1–6.

Submit your numbered answers to all problems in a single Microsoft Word document. Some of these problems require you to draw entity relationship diagrams (ERDs), or class diagrams. For this assignment, you may sketch these diagrams by hand and insert a photo or scanned image of your sketch in your Word document. Make sure your sketches are legible in the document. If you choose, you may also create these diagrams using the drawing tools in MS Word, or create the diagrams in MS Visio or another application and copy and paste them into your Word document. You will learn more about using MS Visio to create these diagrams in Week 2. Please follow the 80/20 Rule for all written assignments: 80% or more of the work is in your own words and 20% or less is in the words of another author.

Submit your assignment.

BIAM 530 Week 2 Database Design

BIAM 530 Week 2 Discussions

DQ 1 DATABASE DESIGN FOR A GOLF DISTRIBUTOR & UNDERSTANDING AN ENTITY RELATIONSHIP DIAGRAM (ERD)

  • You have been asked to create the logical data model for the Golden Eagle Wholesale Golf Distributors. Golden Eagle distributes golf equipment for various manufacturers to the pro shops at golf courses throughout the state. They store the equipment in a centrally located warehouse and ship to the pro shops based on the purchase orders submitted by their sales staff or ones that are phoned in directly by their customers. Each sales rep is assigned to golf courses within a specific area of the state. What entities, attributes, and relationships would you include in the data model for this organization?
  • You have created an entity relationship diagram (ERD) for an organization’s database, and you are preparing to review it with the company’s managers to make sure it is complete and correct. The managers do not have technical backgrounds and are unfamiliar with database design. How would you explain the concept of an ERD to these managers to orient them for your review?

DQ 2 WORKOUT ROOM

Please share your expertise on this Week’s Lab Assignment. Give examples or discuss topics you might consider using and help a classmate. Please post two (2) times throughout the week. (On two different days.)

BIAM 530 Week 2 Lab Relationships and Normalization

In this Lab, you will create an entity relationship diagram (ERD) for a portion of a database that a veterinary clinic might use to keep track of clients, veterinarians, patients, appointments, and procedures.

The major entities involved in this database design are listed below.

  • Clients (humans)
  • Patients (animals)
  • Veterinarians
  • Appointments
  • Procedures (veterinary procedures, such as tests or treatments performed during appointments)

Below are the business rules that apply to these entities.

  • Each Client owns zero or many Patients; each Patient is owned by exactly one Client.
  • Each Patient can have zero or many Appointments; each Appointment is for exactly one Patient.
  • Each Appointment is with exactly one Veterinarian; each Veterinarian can have zero or many Appointments.
  • Each Procedure can be performed during zero or many Appointments; each Appointment can include the performance of zero or many Procedures.

After completing the steps below, submit it as a single Microsoft Visio file named LabWeek2xxx.vsd (where xxx = your initials). This file will contain two diagram pages:

  1. Conceptual: A conceptual data model diagram of this database
  2. Logical: A logical data model diagram of this database

Your deliverable will be evaluated according to the rubric below.

StepCriteriaPoints%
2Conceptual data model includes all entities with correct entity names and all required relationships. Correct cardinalities are indicated using crow’s foot notation. 10 20%
4Logical data model includes the same entities and relationships shown on the conceptual data model. A many-to-many relationship is resolved using an appropriate associative entity. 20 40%
5Logical data model includes reasonable attributes for each entity with appropriate data types, correctly designates all primary and foreign keys, and uses a visually organized and readable layout. 20 40%
 Total 50 100%

The following tutorial will demonstrate, in general, how to use Microsoft Visio 2016 to create an entity relationship diagram (ERD). IMPORTANT: The ERD created in the video is NOT the ERD you will create in this lab. Please watch the video to gain an understanding of how to work in Visio, but follow the written steps below to create the correct deliverable for this Lab activity, based on the Scenario/Summary given at the beginning of this page.

  1. Launch Microsoft Visio.
  2. Create a new Crow’s Foot Database Notation diagram.
  3. Save the diagram using the file name LabWeek2xxx.vsd (where xxx = your initials).
  1. Rename the first page of the diagram to Conceptual-ERD.
  2. Use the Rectangle drawing tool to create and label a rectangle for each entity identified in the Scenario/Summary.
  3. Add relationship lines connecting the entities as described in the business rules provided in the Scenario/Summary. Label each relationship line with a verb phrase describing the relationship.
  4. Set the cardinality symbols on the ends of each relationship line to correctly denote the cardinality of each relationship, as given in the business rules.
  5. Save your changes to the file.
  1. Insert a new page into the diagram and name it Logical-ERD.
  2. Add Entity shapes to the page for each entity shown in the conceptual data model. Label each Entity shape with the corresponding entity name.
  3. As you did for the conceptual data model, add relationship lines connecting the entities as described in the business rules provided in the Scenario/Summary. Label each relationship line using the same verb phrases as you used in the conceptual data model.
  4. Set the cardinality symbols on the ends of each relationship line as you did in the conceptual data model.
  5. Save your changes to the file.
  1. Remove the relationship line indicating a many-to-many relationship from the logical data model.
  2. Add an Entity shape for an associative entity to resolve the many-to-many relationship. Label the associative entity with a meaningful descriptive name.
  3. Add relationship lines connecting the associative entity to each of the entities involved in the original many-to-many relationship. Label each relationship line with a descriptive verb phrase.
  4. Set the cardinality symbols on the ends of each relationship line appropriately.
  5. Save your changes to the file.
  1. Add appropriate attributes for each entity on the logical data model. To add data types, right-click the entity shape while pointing to the entity outline. Select the “Show Attributes” option. Give each attribute a meaningful name. Follow a consistent naming convention for all attributes. You should have a minimum of three attributes for each entity (except possibly the associative entity).
  2. Designate an appropriate primary key for each entity.
  3. Designate appropriate foreign keys to implement all the relationships.
  4. Review your completed diagram and ensure it is in at least third normal form (3NF).
  5. Save your changes to the file.

Write professional report to present your recommended database design and explain to your CEO why you are recommending this design.

Submit your work to Canvas. There should be one MS Word file with Step 6 Report and Screen Prints, OR One MS Word Document with Discussion and one MS Visio file with drawings.

BIAM 530 Week 3 Structured Query Language (SQL)

BIAM 530 Week 3 Discussions

DQ 1 WORKING WITH DATABASE OBJECTS & MANIPULATING DATA IN THE DATABASE

  • Review the Tiny College case concerning the Free Access to Current Technology or FACT library, at the end of Chapter 7 in the textbook (pp. 340–358) from the perspective of a database administrator assigned to build this database. Select one of the entities shown in the ERD for Tiny College’s database in Figure P7.56 on page 341. What data types would you use for the attributes in this entity? How would you code a CREATE TABLE statement to implement this entity as a table in the database?
  • Continue examining the Tiny College case at the end of Chapter 7 in the textbook (pp. 340-358), but this time from the perspective of a manager in the organization. What is one example of a report from the database that a manager might want to receive? What data items would appear on the report, and what attributes and entities would these data items come from? How would you code a SQL SELECT query to retrieve this information?

DQ 2 WORKOUT ROOM

BIAM 530 Week 3 Lab Querying the Database With SQL

Adventure Works Cycles is a fictional bicycle manufacturing company headquartered in Bothell, WA, that sells metal and composite bicycles to distributors in North America, Europe, and Asia. Adventure Works also sells bicycles directly to consumers via the company’s website.

Adventure Works executives are formulating a strategic plan to expand the company’s market share and are seeking information to help them. As a business analyst for Adventure Works, you will write SQL queries to retrieve the requested data from the corporate database, analyze the information, and make recommendations to management.

After completing the steps below, submit a single Microsoft Word file named LabWeek3xxx.docx (where xxx = your initials). This file will contain screenshots for five queries, showing the SQL code and results. After each screen shot, you should include at least a paragraph of text with your analysis and recommendations to management based on the results of the query.

This assignment is a Signature Assignment:

The Week 3 Lab aligns with Outcomes C, D, and E. The Lab provides an existing business (Sample) database. SQL and DML will be used to manage the database and extract data to answer business questions. The results will be reported and analyzed with a description provided. These activities are common activities that take place in businesses on a daily basis around the world. You will provide a written analysis and recommendation for each SQL query.

The focus of this Lab will be:

  1. Work with a real-world Scenario and use real-world data
  2. Learn how SQL is used with DML and manage the data in the database
  3. Describe and analyze query results
  4. Create a report on the data results

Your deliverable will be evaluated according to the rubric below.

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2016

Adventure Works 2016 sample database

Access the software at: https://lab.devry.edu (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

The following tutorials will demonstrate, in general, how to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, how to connect to the Adventure Works database, and how to write and execute queries similar to those in this Lab assignment. IMPORTANT: The queries created in the video are NOT the exact queries you will create in this lab. Please watch the videos to gain an understanding of how to work with SQL, but follow the written steps below to create the correct deliverable for this Lab activity, based on the Scenario/Summary and Deliverables sections at the beginning of this page.

  1. Log in to the Citrix Lab environment (this Lab MUST be performed in Citrix to access the Adventure Works database). See the Course Resources for information on how to access the Citrix Lab environment.
  2. If necessary, locate the SQL2016 Server Management Studio app in the Citrix All Apps menu and click to add it to your Citrix menu screen.
  3. Click the SQL2016 Server Management Studio icon to launch the application.
  4. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to the Database Engine d1w-sqlp00am01\BIAM530.
  5. Click to place your cursor in the blank query pane on the right.
  6. In the Available Databases list, change the selected database from master to AdventureWorks2016. This is the operational database for Adventure Works Cycles that contains the data you will need for your analysis.

Be sure the right database is selected!

Do not select the similarly-named database with the letters “DW” in the name. This is the data warehouse for Adventure Works; it is organized differently and will not work for the queries in this Lab. You will learn to work with data warehouses in a future week.

If when executing a query, you receive an error message indicating that a table name or column name is not recognized, and you are sure you spelled the table or column name correctly, double-check that the correct database is selected. Executing a query against the wrong database is a common source of errors.

Management has asked you to analyze current-year and prior-sales for each geographic territory. Currently, for Adventure Works, in most cases, an entire country is a single territory. However, the United States is currently divided into multiple territories. You will create a query to display the sales for each territory and analyze the results.

  1. In the Object Explorer list, expand the entry for the Sales.SalesTerritory table and review the columns in this table. You will use these in constructing your query.
  2. In the blank query pane on the right, enter a SQL SELECT command that displays the following columns from the Sales.SalesTerritory table: TerritoryID, Name, CountryRegionCode, SalesYTD, and SalesLastYear. Include a clause that sorts the output in descending order by SalesYTD, so that the territory with the highest year-to-date sales will be displayed first.
  3. Execute the query and review the results.
  4. Capture a screen shot showing your SQL code for the query and the results. Paste this into a Microsoft Word document under the heading “Sales by Territory.”
  5. Below the screen shot, write at least a one-paragraph analysis of what these results tell you about the business situation for Adventure Works Cycles. Include at least one recommended action that management should take based on these results.
  6. Save the Word document as LabWeek3xxx.docx (where xxx = your initials). Leave the document open, because you will be adding to it in subsequent steps.

Management has asked you to analyze sales by country, so that the United States as a whole can be compared to other countries. You will create a query to display the sales for each country and analyze the results. Because the Adventure Works database does not have a sales table with one row per country, you will use the Sales.SalesTerritory table again, grouping and summarizing the sales data for all rows with the same country.

  1. Open a new blank query pane.
  2. Enter a SQL SELECT command that displays the following from the Sales.SalesTerritory table: CountryRegionCode, sum of SalesYTD, and sum of SalesLastYear. Use aggregate functions for the sums. Assign appropriate column headings, such as TotalSalesYTD and TotalSalesLastYear to the sums. Include a clause that will group results based on CountryRegionCode.
  3. Execute the query and review the results.
  4. Capture a screen shot showing your SQL code for the query and the results. Paste this into your Microsoft Word document under the heading “Sales by Country.”
  5. Below the screen shot, write at least a one-paragraph analysis of what these results tell you about the business situation for Adventure Works Cycles. Include at least one recommended action that management should take based on these results.
  6. Save the Word document and leave it open, because you will be adding to it in subsequent steps.

Management has asked you to analyze the percentage growth rate in sales from prior year to current year to date for each territory within the United States. You will create a query to display year-to-date sales, prior-year sales, and the percentage change between these for each U.S. territory. You will continue to use the Sales.SalesTerritory table for this query.

  1. Open a new blank query pane.
  2. Enter a SQL SELECT command that displays the following from the Sales.SalesTerritory table: TerritoryID, Name, SalesYTD, SalesLastYear, and a formula that calculates the percent change in sales. The formula for percent change should divide the difference between SalesYTD and SalesLastYear by SalesLastYear and multiply by 100. Assign an appropriate column heading such as PercentChange to this formula. Include a clause that will limit results to rows where the CountryRegionCode is ‘US’.
  3. Execute the query and review the results.
  4. Capture a screen shot showing your SQL code for the query and the results. Paste this into your Microsoft Word document under the heading “Sales Growth by U.S. Territory.”
  5. Below the screen shot, write at least a one-paragraph analysis of what these results tell you about the business situation for Adventure Works Cycles. Include at least one recommended action that management should take based on these results.
  6. Save the Word document and leave it open, because you will be adding to it in subsequent steps.

Management has asked you to analyze products that generate high sales revenue. You will create a query to display the total sales (dollars) for each product with sales greater than $2 million and analyze the results. You will use the Sales.SalesOrderDetail table for this analysis. Because each row in this table represents a single order line item, you will group and summarize all order lines for the same product ID to get total sales per product.

  1. Open a new blank query pane.
  2. Enter a SQL SELECT command that displays the following from the Sales.SalesOrderDetails table: ProductID and sum of LineTotal. Use an aggregate function for the sum. Assign an appropriate column heading such as TotalSales to the sum. Include a clause that will group results based on ProductID. Include a clause that will limit the displayed results to those having a sum of LineTotal greater than $2 million. Include a clause that will sort the results in descending order by the sum or LineTotal, so the product with the highest sales will be displayed first.NOTE: In SQL, numeric values should be entered using only digits and (if necessary) the decimal point. Do not use commas, the dollar sign, or any other currency symbol. The figure $2 million should be entered as 2000000. Be sure to count the number of zeros correctly.
  3. Execute the query and review the results.
  4. Capture a screen shot showing your SQL code for the query and the results. Paste this into your Microsoft Word document under the heading “Best-Selling Products.”
  5. Below the screen shot, write at least a one-paragraph analysis of what these results tell you about the business situation for Adventure Works Cycles. Include at least one recommended action that management should take based on these results.
  6. Save the Word document and leave it open, because you will be adding to it in subsequent steps.

Management would like to see the product names in addition to the product ID numbers for the best-selling products. You will modify your query from the previous step to display the product names. Because only product IDs and not product names are stored in the Sales.SalesOrderDetail table, you will need to include another table, Production.Product, in your query to include the names.

  1. Select and copy the text of your SQL command for best-selling products written in the previous step.
  2. Open a new blank query pane and paste the best-selling products SQL command into this pane. Execute the query to make sure it still works.
  3. Modify the FROM clause of the query to join the Sales.SalesOrderDetail table to the Production.Product table, using the ProductID column in both tables for the join.
  4. Modify the SELECT clause of the query to display the Name column (from the Production.Product table) after the ProductID column in the query results.
  5. Modify the GROUP BY clause of the query to group by both ProductID and Name. (This is necessary because columns can only appear in the SELECT clause of a grouped query if they also appear in the GROUP BY column, or if they are used in an aggregate function.)
  6. Wherever the ProductID column appears in the query, ensure that it is fully qualified, that is, that it has the name of the appropriate table and a period in front of it (that is, either SalesOrderDetail.ProductID or Product.ProductID). This is necessary because there is a ProductID column in both tables and you must tell SQL which one you mean in each case.
  7. Execute the query and review the results.
  8. Capture a screen shot showing your SQL code for the query and the results. Paste this into your Microsoft Word document under the heading “Best-Selling Products With Product Names.”
  9. Below the screen shot, write at least a one-paragraph analysis of what these results tell you about the business situation for Adventure Works Cycles. Include at least one recommended action that management should take based on these results. Consider what additional information you have, now that you know the product names and not just the product IDs.
  10. Save the Word document and close it.

Submit your completed file as instructed.

BIAM 530 Week 4 Database Life Cycle and Project Planning

BIAM 530 Week 4 Disussions

DQ 1 DATABASE LIFE CYCLE & ALTERNATIVES TO THE TRADITIONAL SDLC

  • Find an article explaining the database life cycle in the DeVry University online library or on an authoritative website. What are the steps in the life cycle according to your source? How do these compare to the steps listed in Chapter 9 of our textbook?
  • Describe an alternative to the traditional SDLC or “waterfall” software development process, such as rapid application development (RAD) or agile development. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this alternative compared to the traditional SDLC? How would this alternative approach affect database development?

BIAM 530 Week 4 Homework

Green Vehicles Inc. (GVI) operates a chain of car dealerships that sell and service electric car models from several manufacturers, including the Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, and others. Because the parts departments at each dealership must stock parts from multiple manufacturers, the company requires a custom database system to manage parts inventories. You have been hired as a consultant to advise GVI’s managers on the best process to follow in developing such a system.

Research the topic of database development and write a three to five page paper that addresses the following questions:

  1. What software development process (SDLC) should GVI follow for its inventory management system, and what are the major steps in this process and what methodology would you recommend?
  2. What database development process (DBLC) should GVI follow for the inventory database in this system, and what are the major steps in this process?
  3. What are some best practices that GVI should observe to help ensure the success of this project?

The paper should be in APA format, double-spaced using 12-point Times New Roman font, with a cover page and reference list. The cover page and reference list do not count toward the required page count. The paper should include at least three references, one of which can be the course textbook. Please follow the 80/20 Rule for all written assignments: 80% or more of the work is in your own words and 20% or less is in the words of another author. The paper will be graded using the following rubric.

CategoryPointsPercentDescription

BIAM 530 Week 5 Lab Analyzing Data With Hadoop

Hadoop is a computing framework that provides the ability to store and analyze very large data sets using a cluster of many inexpensive computers.  The objective of this lab is to familiarize you with the capabilities of the Hadoop platform, including how data files are transferred to Hadoop in preparation for analysis.

In this lab, you will view a video about a large-scale data analysis project done as part of the “Big Data for Social Good Challenge” sponsored by IBM and Hadoop. Because of the large volume of data involved, Hadoop was used to perform each analysis. You will answer a series of questions about how the analysis was performed, what could have been done differently, and other applications for this analytical technique. You will then create your own account on a cloud-based Hadoop system and practice performing some basic operations with Hadoop.

NOTE

Parts of this Lab activity are adapted from “Big Data for Social Good Example Demo” by the IBM Bluemix Team, 2015, retrieved from http://ibmhadoop.devpost.com/submissions (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Adapted with permission under terms of the IBM Academic Initiative.

Additional resources and activities for learning about Hadoop and other big data topics are available through the IBM Big Data University site at http://bigdatauniversity.com/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Students my optionally register for a free account at Big Data University and explore these supplemental resources

Submit a Word document named LabWeek5xxx.docx (where xxx = your initials) that includes your answers to the questions about the Hadoop tutorial video, plus screen shots documenting your completion of basic Hadoop operations on the cloud-based system.

Your deliverable will be evaluated according to the following rubric.

Select the View Complaint Data option, use the filtering tools to select a subset of a few thousand complaints, and export the results as a CSV file. Save the exported complaint file in the Downloads folder on the Citrix server (not on your local computer). Close the Citrix browser window.
  3. Go to Apps and use the search box at the upper right to locate the Cygwin 1_7_35 application. Click the icon to launch the application. (If desired, you can click the Details link and add the app to your Favorites page to make it easier to find in the future.) Cygwin is a Linux-like command-line environment containing tools we will use to communicate with our Hadoop cluster.
  4. Enter the following commands at the $ prompt in Cygwin:
    cd Downloads
    ls
You should see the complaint file you downloaded in the previous step displayed.
  5. Enter the following commands at the $ prompt in Cygwin:
    scp  *.csv username@hostname:
where username and hostname are the names that were provided under Connection Details earlier. (You should have these saved in your Word document.) Don’t forget to add the colon ( : ) at the end of this command. You may receive a message saying that the authenticity of the host cannot be established and asking if you are sure you want to continue. Answer yes and press Enter. (This is because the Hadoop cluster on the Cognitive Class Labs Cloud is not set up as a secure production system, as it is only intended for educational purposes.)You may see messages indicating a directory could not be created and that the system failed to add the host to a list of known hosts. These are normal and will not create any problems for our purposes. When prompted, enter the password for the Cognitive Class Labs Cloud account you set up earlier, and press Enter. (Nothing will display on the screen as you enter the password.)The complaint file will be copied to your account on the Cognitive Class Labs Cloud system.
Capture a screen shot of this command and its output, and paste it into your Word document.
  6. After the previous command completes, enter the following command at the $ prompt in Cygwin:
    ssh username@hostname
where username and hostname are the names that were provided under Connection Details earlier. (You should have these saved in your Word document.)You may receive a message saying that the authenticity of the host cannot be established and asking if you are sure you want to continue. (Nothing will display on the screen as you enter the password.)A prompt like [username@hostname ~]$ indicates you have a connection established and are now ready to enter commands to Hadoop.
  7. Enter the following command to list files and directories in your home directory on the system:
    ls
You should see the complaint file you transferred previously. Capture a screen shot of the resulting file list and paste it into your Word document.
  8. Enter the following command to create a directory called test in the Hadoop file system:
    hadoop fs -mkdir test
  9. Enter the following to load the complaint file into the test directory in HDFS that you just created:
    hadoop fs -put /mnt/home/username/*.csv test
where username is the Hadoop username provided under Connection Details earlier.
  10. Enter the following command to display your Hadoop test directory and its contents:
    hadoop fs -ls -R
Capture a screen shot showing this command and its resulting output, and paste it into your Word document.Note that the number “3” appears after the file permissions on the line for complaint file. This indicates the replication factor for the file, i.e., by default, 3 copies of this file have been created on the Hadoop cluster. This is part of the distributed nature of HDFS; files are replicated on multiple DataNodes so that if one DataNode in the cluster goes down, the data will still be accessible.
  11. Enter the following command to display the first few lines of the complaint file:
    head -3 *.csv
You should see the first 3 rows of data from the complaint file. Capture a screen shot of this command and its output, and paste it into your Word document.
  12. Enter the following command to close the connection to the Hadoop cluster:
    exit
  13. Save your Word document and close it; close the Cygwin application; and log out of the Cognitive Class Labs Cloud site.

Submit your completed file.

BIAM 530 Week 6 Lab Building and Using a Data Warehouse

As you may recall from an earlier Lab activity, Adventure Works Cycles is a fictional bicycle manufacturing company headquartered in Bothell, WA, that sells metal and composite bicycles to distributors in North America, Europe, and Asia. Adventure Works also sells bicycles directly to consumers via the company’s website.

Adventure Works uses a data warehouse to provide decision support services to executives. In this Lab activity, to better understand the structure of a data warehouse, you will first create a simple example of a star schema in your individual data warehouse area. You will use SQL commands to transfer data from the Adventure Works data warehouse into your data warehouse. Finally, you will use your simplified data warehouse to generate a business intelligence report on sales, analyze the data shown on the report, and make recommendations to management.

After completing the steps below, submit a single Microsoft Word file named LabWeek6.xxx.docx (where xxx = your initials). This file will contain screen shots for your queries to create and populate your data warehouse, a screen shot of your completed sales report, and your analysis and recommendations to management based on the sales report.

Your deliverable will be evaluated based on the following rubric.

StepCriteriaPoints%
2CREATE TABLE queries have valid SQL syntax and reference the specified tables, columns, data types, and constraints. Results shown indicate successful execution.1020%
3 INSERT queries have valid SQL syntax and reference the specified tables and columns. Results show correct number of records were extracted from the source database and loaded into the student’s individual data warehouse. 1020%
5Sales report correctly shows sales analyzed by specified dimensions with clear, easily readable layout and professional formatting. 15 30%
6Analysis and recommendations are reasonable, show good business judgements based on the report, and are written professionally with no grammar, spelling, or typographical errors. 1530%

  1. Log in to the Citrix Lab environment (this Lab MUST be performed in Citrix to access the Adventure Works database). See Course Resources for information on how to access the Citrix Lab environment.
  2. If necessary, locate the SQL Server Management Studio 2016 app in the Citrix All Apps menu and click to add it to your Citrix menu screen.
  3. Click the SQL2016 Server Management Studio icon to launch the application.
  4. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to the Database Engine d1w-sqlp00am01\BIAM530.
  5. Click to place your cursor in the blank query pane on the right.
  6. In the Available Databases list, change the selected database from master to AdventureWorksDW2016. This is the data warehouse for Adventure Works Cycles.

Be sure the right database is selected!

In a previous Lab, we used the Adventure Works operational database. In this Lab activity, we will begin by examining the Adventure Works data warehouse, so this time, be sure you do select the database with the letters “DW” in the name.

  1. Expand the list of tables for the AdventureWorksDW2016 database, right-click on the DimProduct table, and select Script Tables as > CREATE To > New Query Editor Window. This will generate a SQL script in a query window that can be used to create the DimProduct table. In this script, delete the USE command at the beginning and also delete all the ALTER TABLE commands at the end
  2. Generate a similar script for creating the DimCustomer table. As before, delete the USE command at the beginning of the script and all the ALTER TABLE commands at the end.
  3. Generate a similar script for creating the FactInternetSales table. As before, delete the USE command at the beginning of the script. At the end of the script, delete all the ALTER TABLE commands except the ones that refer to the DimProduct and DimCustomer tables; leave those commands unchanged.
  4. Select the query window containing the script to create the DimProduct table. In the Available Databases list, change the selected database from AdventureWorksDW2016 to your individual data warehouse database. This is named Dnnnnnnnn530mmmyyDW, where Dnnnnnnnn = your DeVry student ID number and mmmyy = the month and year for the session you are taking this course. Note that the month is the beginning month for the session, not necessarily the month in which you are doing this Lab activity. For example, for the May 2018 session, you would select Dnnnnnnnn530MAY18DW, even if you are doing this Lab in June 2018. Be sure to select the database ending in DW (data warehouse) and not DB. Execute the script to create a copy of the DimProduct table in your individual data warehouse. Capture a screen shot showing the script and the result, which should be a message indicating the commands completed successfully. Paste this screen shot into a Microsoft Word document named LabWeek6xxx.docx (where xxx = your initials).
  5. Select the query window containing the script to create the DimCustomer table. Again, change the selected database from AdventureWorksDW2016 to your individual data warehouse database. Execute the script to create your copy of the DimCustomer table. Capture a screen shot showing the script and the successful result and paste this screen shot into your Word document.
  6. Select the query window containing the script to create the FactInternetSales table. Again, change the selected database from AdventureWorksDW2016 to your individual data warehouse database. Execute the script to create your copy of the FactInternetSales table. Capture a screen shot showing the script and the successful result and paste this screen shot into your Word document.
  7. Expand the list of tables under your individual data warehouse database and verify that the DimCustomer, DimProduct, and FactInternetSales are listed.
  1. Right-click on the DimProduct table in your individual data warehouse and select Script Table as > INSERT to > New Query Editor Window. This will generate a SQL script that can be used to insert data into the table.
  2. At the beginning of the script, add the following command to allow inserting data into the table’s primary key:SET IDENTITY_INSERT DimProduct ONGO
  3. Immediately after the line beginning INSERT INTO . . . , add the primary key to the list of fields to be inserted by changing the line([ProductAlternateKey]to(ProductKey, [ProductAlternateKey]
  4. Find the line beginning VALUES. Delete this line and all subsequent lines up to (but not including) the line containing the GO command. Instead, enter the following to copy data from the existing DimProduct table in the Adventure Works data warehouse and insert it into your DimProduct table:
    SELECT * FROM AdventureWorksDW2016.dbo.DimProduct
  5. Execute the modified script to populate your DimProduct table. You should see a message indicating that the query executed successfully and showing the number of rows that were affected. Capture a screen shot showing the script and the number of rows affected and paste this screen shot into your Word document.
  6. Follow a similar procedure to create, modify, and execute a script to copy data from the DimCustomer table in the Adventure Works data warehouse to your DimCustomer table. Capture a screen shot showing the script and the number of rows affected and paste this screen shot into your Word document.
  7. Follow a similar procedure to create, modify, and execute a script to copy data from the FactInternetSales table in the Adventure Works data warehouse to your FactInternetSales table. For this table, it is not necessary to turn on IDENTITY_INSERT or add the primary key to the field list, since this table does not use an automatically generated primary key. Capture a screen shot showing the script and the number of rows affected and paste this screen shot into your Word document.
  1. Log into the Citrix Lab environment if you are not already logged in.
  2. If necessary, locate the SQL Server Data Tools 2015 application and add it to your Citrix menu screen.
  3. Click the Data Tools icon to launch the application.
  4. Create a new Business Intelligence Project using the Report Server Project Wizard template. Name the project AdventureWorks DW Sales Report.
  1. Click past the Welcome page of the report wizard.
  2. On the Select the Data Source page of the report wizard, create a new Microsoft SQL Server data source named AdventureWorksDW. Edit the data source properties to select your individual data warehouse as the data source. Recall that your individual data warehouse is named Dnnnnnnnn530mmmyyDW, where Dnnnnnnnn = your DeVry Student ID number and mmmyy = the month and year of the session.
  3. On the Design the Query page of the report wizard, use the Query Builder to create a query that includes all three tables (DimProduct, DimCustomer, and FactInternetSales). Select the ModelName field from the DimProduct table, the Gender field from the DimCustomer table, and the SalesAmount field from the FactInternetSales table.
  4. On the Report Type page of the report wizard, select Matrix.
  5. On the Design the Matrix page of the report wizard, use Gender as the columns, ModelName as the rows, and SalesAmount as the details.
  6. On the Completing the Wizard page of the report wizard, check the box to preview the report and then click Finish.
  7. After a short delay, the report will be displayed in the Preview tab. Capture a screenshot showing the report preview. Paste this screen shot into your Word document.
  1. Below the screen shot of the sales report in your Word document, write a three to five paragraph analysis of what these results tell you about Internet sales for Adventure Works.
  2. Also in your Word document, write at least three recommendations you would make to management based on these results.

Submit your completed Word document, including screenshots, analysis, and recommendations.

BIAM 530 Week 7 HOMEWORK

Mobile Adventures LLC develops and distributes adventure games for Apple (iOS) and Android smartphones and tablets. The company currently has three popular games in distribution and is developing two more. Customers pay an initial fee to download each game plus an annual subscription fee for continued access to the company’s servers for multi-user play. The company also places mobile advertising within the games as an additional revenue stream. Mobile Adventures collects a variety of data on each player, including the player’s e-mail address, type of mobile device, frequency and duration of game play, and highest level reached within each game. Each time a user views or clicks on an in-game ad is also recorded.

You have been hired as a consultant by Mobile Adventures to advise them on how they can best realize additional value from their collected user data and how this data should be managed and protected.

Research the topic of data management and protection and write a three to five page paper that addresses the following questions:

  1. How would you justify to Mobile Adventures’ executives that they should treat their player data as a valuable business asset?
  2. What are at least two ways in which Mobile Adventures could monetize (i.e., realize additional revenue from) the data they currently collect from game players?
  3. What are the major threats to Mobile Adventures’ data, and what policies and procedures would you recommend to mitigate these threats?
