Answer:

Summary of the article:

The article by Dale-Tam and Thompson (2021) titled ‘Nursing orientation during the Covid-19 pandemic’ that gives a summary on the effect of a nurse-led orientation program on meeting the nurse’s need to practice safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Canadian healthcare system was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and in response to the challenges faced; they started implementing new strategies to onboard new healthcare staffs. The article reported about a corporate nursing orientation program where blended model of learning is used such as the pre-orientation online modules, online didactic sessions and experiential learning sessions. During the spread of the COVID-19 infection, there was a fact paced shift from a face-to-face model of care to a virtual orientation model. The advantage of nursing orientation is it increases familiarity to the organization structure and also evaluates the skills of a nurse in providing safe care.

In the article, the authors reported about the outcome of a medical surgical orientation program which was implemented in mid-March 2020. In this orientation program, the nurse educator team selected four presentations which provided context on different services such as the pain management service and modalities for pain management palliative care. Simulations were conducted regarding ways to maintain physical distancing during the unit orientation program. Each nurses completed the buddy shifts after the completion of the virtual orientation program. Each nurse was monitored during the buddy shifts and it provided each one of them the opportunity to take feedback and inquire about their work. After completion of the orientation program, each nurse was provided with an anonymous 11 question survey question that provided them with the opportunity to evaluate their experiences and make changes to the future virtual orientation programs.

The outcome of the program revealed that total five nurses were included in the program and out of them, four nurses responded to the virtual orientation survey. It was found that skills like AED use, intravenous pumps and PICC meet the needs of the four nurses. In case of inquiry related to the additional skills needed, the nurses reported further training on the electronic medical record and enterostomal care. The accountability checklist was completed by all nurses. In addition, the recruitment of the recently placed nurses was taken over by the surgical resource team and the inpatient surgical unit.

Overall, the results or outcomes of the virtual orientation model showed promise, but suggested the need for improvement in many areas. The orientation program gave the notion that by giving nurses access to practice-specific information, they can work at their own pace and it is relevant to the adult learning principles. The nurses gave good rating for the orientation program and overall the team was prepared to practice safely following the training. Use of simulation and training before the COVID-19 pandemic also promoted knowledge acquisition among the staffs. However, one gap in the study was that it was done with sample size and it could affect the generalizability of the findings. Despite this gap, the feedback given by learners could guide the way for the development and improvement of future orientation programs.
