One current article on a nurse-led improvement project that has enhanced patient safety and quality in a healthcare setting is “Implementation of a Nurse-Led Pressure Injury Prevention Program in a Rehabilitation Setting: A Quality Improvement Project” by Shaw et al. (2017). The purpose of this project was to reduce the incidence of pressure injuries in a rehabilitation setting through the implementation of a nurse-led prevention program.
The method of this project involved the creation of a pressure injury prevention team consisting of nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. The team received education on pressure injury prevention and implemented evidence-based guidelines for skin assessment and prevention strategies. The outcomes of the project were a reduction in the incidence of pressure injuries and an increase in staff knowledge and adherence to pressure injury prevention guidelines.
This project has the potential to improve quality and safety for patients by reducing the occurrence of pressure injuries, which can be painful and can lead to further complications such as infection. The implementation of evidence-based guidelines and education for staff also promotes a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the healthcare setting.
Two insights gained from this project that enhance my personal professional goals include the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork and the value of implementing evidence-based practices. As a healthcare provider, it is crucial to collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines to provide the best care for patients. Additionally, staying up-to-date on current evidence and incorporating it into practice can help ensure that patients receive the most effective and safe care possible.
